GREATER AMARILLO OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE®
AWARDS GRANTS TO TEXAS AGRILIFE EXTENSION SERVICE, AMARILLO AREA BREAST HEALTH COALITION, KACV, GIRL SCOUTS, AND THE DON &SYBIL HARRINGTON CANCER CENTER TO FUND COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Organization’s Community-Based Grants Dedicated to Filling
Unmet Breast Health, Breast Cancer Needs

Amarillo – April 14, 2009 – TEXAS AGRILIFE EXTENSION SERVICE, AMARILLO AREA BREAST HEALTH COALITION, KACV, GIRL SCOUTS, and THE DON &SYBIL HARRINGTON CANCER CENTER has been awarded grants from The Komen Greater Amarillo Affiliate for the movement towards fighting breast cancer by advanced research, early detection, raising the number of survivors, and educating our community.

The Greater Amarillo Affiliate is part of the 125-member Affiliate network of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer forever. Local Affiliates serve as the face and voice of Komen for the Cure’s global breast cancer movement, mobilizing millions of everyday people through activities like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series, the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer.

Lisa Hoff Davis, Greater Amarillo Executive Director said the award was made specifically to address the unmet breast health needs of the women in the Texas Panhandle.  “Early detection is critical.   The five-year survival rate for breast cancer, when caught early before it spreads beyond the breast, is now 98 percent (compared to 74 percent in 1982).”

Texas AgriLife Extension Service will utilize Komen dollars to provide quality and relevant education in their project Breast Health in the Rural Panhandle Counties.  The Greater Amarillo Affiliate will provide funding for The Breast Cancer Screening Program through the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center, which offers screening and diagnostic mammography for women who are not covered by other financial backing.  Additionally, The Amarillo Area Breast Health Coalition will continue their efforts to assist in early detection and target low income women residing in Amarillo through the W.I.S.E. Woman Program.  Other programs funded by the Greater Amarillo Affiliate include Girl Scout’s of Texas Oklahoma Plains “Daisies in Bloom” Health Education Brunch and Fashion Show and KACV-TV for Breast Health Education Television Campaign to develop English and Spanish informative announcements for the Texas Panhandle.

Komen and its Affiliates are known globally for their dedication to filling existing gaps in breast health and breast cancer needs. To make sure they are addressing needs that no one else is meeting in their own service areas, Komen Affiliates work with local medical experts and community leaders to conduct comprehensive community needs assessments. These community profiles are then used to establish local grant application and review processes consistent with Komen's promise to end breast cancer forever.
