Greater Amarillo AFFILIATE of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Funds COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Volunteers Help Serve Unmet Breast Health Needs of Amarillo and the Texas Panhandles Medically Underserved

Amarillo, TX  – May 27, 2008 – The Greater Amarillo Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, one of over 100 Affiliates nationwide dedicated to putting an end to breast cancer, recently provided community grants totaling $190,000 to support Amarillo-area breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs.

The Komen Amarillo Affiliate’s local fundraising efforts, such as the Komen Greater Amarillo Race for the Cure®, have enabled it to fund projects such as The Breast Cancer Screening Program through the Don & Sybil Harrington Cancer Center, which offers screening and diagnostic mammography for women ages 35-49, who are not covered by other funding.  Additionally, The Amarillo Breast Prosthesis Program through the American Cancer SocietyOther programs funded by the Komen Greater Amarillo Affiliate include: Moore County Hospital’s Breast Cancer Screening Program, Girl Scout’s of Texas Oklahoma Plains “Daisies in BloomHealth Education Brunch and the Amarillo Area Breast Health Coalition’s Project Hope.

“Last September, hundreds of volunteers and over 4300 Race participants joined together in a day of inspiration and hope proving that not only survivors support breast cancer health, but communities will come together to find the cures.  These Komen funded programs are a result of that effort.  We feel extremely fortunate to help meet the breast health needs within our community,” said Lisa Hoff Davis, Komen Greater Amarillo Affiliate Executive Director.

Up to 75 percent of funds raised by a Komen Affiliate remains in the community to fund local breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs. Remaining net income (a minimum of 25 percent) supports Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific programs around the world.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Organization is an international organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through local Affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure® to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. A global leader in the fight against breast cancer, the Organization fulfills its mission through support of innovative breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards and educational, scientific and community outreach programs around the world. Through fiscal year 2005, the Komen Organization, together with its Affiliate Network, corporate partners and generous donors, has invested $630 million in breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs.

Please participate in the Greater Amarillo Race for the Cure on September 27, 2008.
