To truly eradicate breast cancer, we must not only invest in research for a cure for future generations, but we must also help meet the immediate breast health needs of women and their families facing the disease today.
In addition to raising funds for breast health programs for underserved women in the Greater Amarillo service area, Komen Amarillo offers educational messages to raise awareness among ALL families in our community that EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES. Early detection and treatment offer the best chance of cure and ultimately survival. When the disease is confined to the breast, the 5-year survival rate is over 95%.
Komen's Recommendations for Good Breast Health include:
* Women should be familiar with their own bodies and report any
changes in their breasts to their health care provider right away.
* Younger women should have clinical breast exams (CBE) by a
health care provider at least every 3 years starting at age 20, and every year after 40.
* Women under the age of 40 with a family history of breast cancer
or other concerns should talk with a health care provider as screening tests may be needed more often and/or started earlier.
* It is also important that all women know their family medical
history, understand their personal risk for breast cancer and make healthy lifestyle choices that may reduce their risk of breast cancer.
Make these actions part of your life. You are the cure.

Local volunteers have acted on behalf of the Greater Amariilo Affiliate through outreach programs designed to increase awareness and knowledge of breast health and Komen activities. Increasing awareness of breast health practices through distribution of educational materials and speakers is vital to achieving our mission. Komen for the Cure has developed a compelling educational initiative called I AM THE CURE.™ This program will boost the educational outreach of our Race program, motivating women to take an active role in their own breast health.
I AM THE CURE.™ is a rallying cry that is emotional, memorable and motivational. It speaks to the importance of early detection, understanding that early detection is the best defense, and provides simple, action-oriented messages that Race participants can take home and put into action.
